In Blogs We Trust: Making Money from a Macro-Blog in the Age of Social Media

Google just gave me an other hundred bucks for all the ads on my blog (hosted by Google but written by me).

I have to admit I prefer microblogging on Twitter. That's proven by 14,000 tweets. It is a far more efficient medium to share ideas and reference material already written by others. However, blog posts have staying power. Tweets are short term. As I no longer blog frequently, my page rank on Google has taken a hit and yet  people still manage to read my old blog posts thanks to other search engines and links on Wikipedia and other sites. And then they click on the ads.

Often, the best way to change someone's opinion on something is to let them speak. As they run out of arguments, they start to self doubt. That's when they are vulnerable to new ideas. Macro-blogging does that. Whereas someone might have enough knowledge and strong opinions on a subject to write 140 characters or to forward a text picture on Facebook, they quickly run out when faced with the unlimited space of a blog post.

If you have real or social media friends that have strong opinions that you disagree with, encourage them to blog. Tell them about the bored government workers that read blogs on their lunch hours because Facebook is banned from the office. Tell them about the articles you wrote 5 years ago that are still read. More importantly, tell them that your drinks this weekend were financed thanks to stuff you wrote in bed.

In other news, my favourite podcast, The Guardian's Media Talk, is coming to an end. Here is the last episode (MP3) of Media Talk. The folks over at Twit.tv seem to still be able to monitze the spoken word. Anybody know of a good alternative to Media Talk? I'd settle for a blog.

5 Years and 14,500 Tweets

5 Years that I've been on Twitter. 5 years. So lets see: 14,500 tweets/(365 X 5)= 7.9 tweets a day. Hmm.

I don't know about 2009, but right now, Miley Cyrus does indeed have more followers than Ashton Kutcher.

Paul Wells joined later that year. He now has published 47,000 tweets.

2010 was the year of the iPad. I was obsessed. 870 tweets in March 2010, 28 per day!  Only 33 tweets a year later, but still obsessed with the iPad.

In May 2012, some nimcompoop at Yahoo killed Geocities. The CBC still survives.

6 Honest Truths A Woman Can Learn About Herself After A One-Night Stand

That title, my friends, is why I am blogging from my basement apartment instead of from wherever successful bloggers blog from. Success measure by money, obviously. The Woven empire though of that title. Not me. The best I could come up with was jibes at Gerard Kennedy and nonsense about puppies. Sigh.

Anyway, Woven just bought Uproxx, a "blog" I recently discovered from a lesbian friend I added after joining Facebook. It is actually quite good. Not Wall Street Journal good. Mind you. But good enough.

Photo of the Mad Men star stolen from Uproxx (who probably stole if from someone else). If you own the copyright to this picture, please be advised this blog generated 83 cents last month and that the owner lives in a basement apartment.

I Love These Songs

I'm not sure what it is about these songs, but I've played them over and over again. Some of the videos are OK as well. But really, it's the music.

Passenger: Let Her Go.

Lorde: Royals

Avicii: Wake Me Up

Ylvis: What Does the Fox Say?

If you are keeping track, that's British, New Zealand, Swedish and Norwegian music. Here is some Korean music to round it off. Giant hat tip to California's Google.

Others I like:
-The ultimate ringtone: LMFAO Party Rock Anthem.

Not safe for work because of the boobies (OK, these ones I like mostly for the visuals, but the music is OK to):
-Robin Thincke: Blurred Lines
-Miley Cyrus: Wrecking Ball.

Modern Seinfeld

Ricky Gervais, Jerry Seinfeld and an Austin Healey in an
unothorised screen capture of the Death Machine episode of
Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.
While writing this post I got seriously distracted by Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee (hat tip NY Times) and tracking down "The League" (found it on iTunes) as per a comment on the Wired article:

"Worst idea ever, we already have "The IT Crowd", "Always Sunny [in Philadelphia]", "The League", "30 Rock", "Modern Family" and dare I say, the [...] US version of "The Office" all dealing with 'Today' "

By the way, I can't speak for The League, but you should absolutely watch every episode of the above shows (most are on iTunes) before wasting your time with the rest of this post.

After a couple of the people I follow on Twitter retweeted Modern Seinfeld ( @SeinfeldToday ), a fan fiction account with 140 character summaries of modern never aired Seinfeld episodes, I read all 22 days worth. I laughed and I felt good after reading them.

I'm now one of 292,542 followers.

To my chagrin, we aren't exactly a secret society. The following articles have been written about the account. I'm a 24/7 connected new junky and huge Seinfeld show fan, how did I take so long to catch on?

Free News

Shortcut: http://j.mp/news2013
We don't pay for maps or encyclopedias any more, why should we pay for news or, worse, opinions?

Pay for news if you want, but I prefer to spend my money on food, rent and the occasional beer.

Ski Lake Louise Now In Google Streetview

If this view isn't enough to get you to contact your travel agent, it should at least motivate you to connect your computer to your high definition television set.

It's a bit colder in real life and it is sometimes windy. But it is always that sunny. :)

When you are done with Lake Louise you can check out Sunshine and Whistler. If you don't know where they are, you can use Google Maps.
Hat tip, Google Maps blog.

Gangnam Style

600 million views may seem like allot, but it really is just 100 million people watching it 6 times on their iPad, Gangnam style. By the way, I found out about the Korean music star PSY from this week's Newsweek. Newsweek! I feel old.

Unlike my trip across the US last century when everybody was playing Alanis Morisette, I can report that PSY hasn't gone main stream yet in either Hong Kong or Tokyo. Or perhaps they are more reserved when it comes to sharing music. What I'm saying is that it is probably still cool to like his music. :)

An expensive spoof was produced at MIT. PSY is going to speak at Oxford University. The Secratery General of the UN met with PSY and learned some dance moves

PSY is a guy who has bulging ideas rather than muscles.

Enjoy.

By they way, men of the Gangnam district of Seoul, South Korea, like to drink their coffees in one shot before it cools down. Proof.

I love Dynamic View... When It Works

Dynamic View, Google's newest templates (11 months old) simply don't work all the time. Imagine having cool new light-bulbs that didn't always turn on. Sometimes the pages load correctly, sometimes they don't load at all. And who knows why.

After a Summer of impressive page views, I've given up. No way that many people have switched to Google Chrome. The fact is, Dynamic Views exclude a giant chunk of Internet users. And I'm not cool with that (even though Dynamic Views are cool).

So I've had to admit defeat and revert to one of the non-dynamic views. For the dynamic view lovers out there, I've made it easy to view this blog in the seven dynamic view options (my favourites are Mosaic and Snapshot). This compromise isn't perfect, but they never are, are they?

On the plus side, I now can obsess about Sitemetre stats again. I can also use my beloved gadgets like the sunlight one. The down side is you can't link to specific articles in Dynamic view, or view any of the gadgets when in Dynamic view. Oh well.

Megaupload

You could argue the use of Black people people in this video is code for "plenty of illegal stuff here". So it is ironic that convicted embezelor  Kim Dotcom wants Americans to vote Republican.

No mention of Kim Dotcom's (formerly Kim Schmitz) criminal past in this interview.

If Black pirates used Megaupload, their gay equivalent used Oron.com. That company was recently sued into oblivion by a gay porn site.

The question is, who will take down Microsoft's Sky Drive? Or is it safe because it is American? Althought Google and their Youtube service is American, and they have had plenty of problems with content producers, including illegal take down requests.

Filesonic is out of the filesharing business. Say what you want about pirates using filesharing services, there clearly is a need for that type of service, as many people still try to send large files via email.

NY Times China Via Google Translate

When reading the NY Times via Twitter and Google search becomes too
much of a hassle, you can now read the Chinese version. And if you
don't speak Mandarin, you can use Google Translate.

By the way, wouldn't it make more sense for Bloomingdales to advertise
in the airline in-flight magazines. What is the percentage of New York
Times readers that actually visit New York? Probably high now that I
think about it.

In French, You Only Capitalize the First Word of a Title

This is a For Your Information post from a blogger who lives in a very fragile glass house. Heaven knows, spelling, typo avoidance and grammar are not my strong suites.

However, since the error is most often made by English speaking writers, I thought I'd point it out. Because capitalizing every word in a title in French basically screams out "Written By Anglo".

Here are some examples of proper title capitalization in French. Here, the Bloc Québécois gets around the rule, sort of, by writing in all caps. By the way, the Q of Québécois should be lowercase, but you could forgive the implied "des" which would make it OK (Bloc de Québécois as in bloc of Quebeckers and not Quebec bloc).

Once you have mastered that, you can move on to subtleties like these:
Can you explain Nouveau Parti démocratique ? Also, note the capital  E in "La journée mondiale de l'Environnement" but the lower case of Journée mondiale des océans, found here.

Update: Just realised Blogues Progressites is OK if you accept that it implies "de" as in Blogues de Progressistes. And since the English title is Progressive Bloggers, not Progressive Blogs, I suppose it does.

Blogger Dynamic View Template

Have you been blogging for a while (despite Twitter)? Do you hate iPad users? Have you gotten into the habit of inserting at least one picture or Youtube video into each post?

If you answered yes to all of the above, try Blogger's Dynamic View template. But first, save your current blog template!

There are some major issues:
-Incompatibility with older browsers and the iPad.
-Loading pages can take a while, and Adsense loads last!
-Most widgets/gadgets, including html coding, will no longer work.
-There is a gigantic title bar that I can't make smaller (there has to be a way, right?)

Dynamic View templates are over a year old, and believe it or not some issues have been fixed (originally, you couldn't insert Adsense at all!).

Despite the major drawbacks, it does look amazing!

To try it, in the Blogger settings you also need to put your feed to "full" not "short".

Some examples (other than this blog, assuming I haven't gone back to full iPad compatibility)
-http://lemuelong.blogspot.ca/?view=snapshot

A nice post from last year about the new Dynamic template in Blogger.

Blogger uses it, so it can't be that bad (I guess Google employees don't use iPads).

Is there a way to only browse/search dynamic blogs? Scrolling is so 2010. :)

This person did it right: A partial implementation of the Dynamic View template. I think you have to clik "enable dynamic view" somewhere in the Blogger settings (and perhaps have a compatible template). That way she could keep her regular template and offer the dynamic option. An other example of partial implementation.

Truthiness: Obama is Kenyan and Gawker is Too Rich

I'd like to thank Gawker for providing this funny clip (somehow
viewable in Canada) of Colbert explaining the silly election season
and the appeals to the fringe vote.

Two questions:
-How does Gawker get permission to post this (if they do)?
-How do they make their money (I don't see any advertising)?

In Canada, you can watch the entire Colbert report on CTV, Comedy
Network and their respective web sites. In the USA on Comedy Central
channel and, I think, Hulu.

Best Article Ever

Call your stockbroker tomorrow and buy shares of the Daily Mail and General Trust. The masses have arrived on the Internet, and that company is taking full advantage.

The Daily Mail was Britain's first daily newspaper aimed at the newly literate "lower-middle class market. (Wikipedia)
Staying true to its origins, this article is pure gold. Note that I'm not normally drawn to the lifestyle section of newspapers, but the thumbnail for that article was hard to resist. Obviously, at some point people will get tired of articles about pretty women. Right? :)

Some newspapers are dying a slow death, others have adjusted to the new realities.

My Blog Feed Was too Darn Big!

Wow, it never occurred to me that this applied to me:

Feedburner:
The trouble: Your Original Feed is too doggone big! FeedBurner does not process feeds that are larger than 512K. Remember, your feed is an update on your content — not an archive for it — and you should use your publishing tools' controls to make sure your feed doesn't grow like kudzu possessed.

Half a megabyte of text!  That is about 250 pages of text. This blog has existed since 2004, so I guess that makes sense. But I thought micro-blogging (Twitter) taught me to be concise...

For those of you that use Feedburner (of dubious use, I don't recommend it) and Blogger, here is the solution:

Replace "myblogname" with the name of your blog.

So now, if you subscribe to my blog using your favourite blog reader (I use Google Reader), you can "only" read a summary of my last 100 posts. It is summary of each post because I don't want to give this stuff away. $350 in ad revenue, and counting. No bad for 8 years "work".

According to Feedburner, I have 41 subscribers, so I'm sticking with Feedburner and the feed address hasn't changed.

Hat tip to Scott Tribe for pointing out that title gems like Casseroles Not Just for Soup could lead to confusion without context. His tweet also removed any delusions I had about the content of this blog being too hot for Progressive Bloggers. :)

Update: Changed it to 10 from 100 (100 takes too long to load). Also, turned off the "Summary Burner" option in Feedburner so there is a bit more text in my feed.

Congress Monitoring Zosia Mamet

Congress is monitoring Zosia Mamet. First it was someone in the Senate, now it is someone in the House of Representatives (kind of cool that Sitemeter can tell the difference). Why should you care? Because Zosia Mamet is the daughter of the guy who wrote the film Wag the Dog, about Washington faking a war to avoid scandal. Are we really in Afghanistan?

Learning Ski Jumping Takes Courage

Watching this video in my living room I think I was more scared than the 10 year old little girl actually doing it. Although in my defence, she had already done the 20 meter jump.
