New Road Will Allow Far East Road Trip

Never before in the history of the world have you been able to drive in a wheel based vehicle to the east of Labrador from Ontario. The farthest East you can drive from main land North America. And in one season you will be able to.

Awesome.

By the end of the fall, the Transportation and Works department of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador figures phase 3 of the TransLabrador highway will be completed. Click here for a .pdf of the Trans Labrador Highway.

Some of you may be thinking that Brazil is further east. It is. But you can't get from Panama to Columbia in a vehicle thanks to the Darien Gap.

Ironically, thank to Newfoundland, Quebeckers will be able to go to the most eastern extremity of their province by car. Quebeckers can go south and west, and now, thanks to the Trans Labrador Highway, they will be able to go east (with a bit of a detour north).

Once you get to the eastern Quebec city of Blanc Sablon, you will be able, if you so desire, to take a 105 minute ferry crossing to Newfoundland (Much less than the 5 hour crossing from Nova Scotia).

In addition to offering an alternative to sea sick tourists. This new route will be a boon for criminals wanted in New Brunswick or Nova Scotia. For them, the 800 km penalty, each way, will be worth it.

Conservatives Are the Lesser of Two Evils

I was a bit surprised the NDP didn't bring down the Conservative
government. But since Canadians are not ready to support an NDP
federal government, as an NDP suporter, I have to ask myself: who are
worse: Liberals or Conservatives?

For many social democrats or "progressives", the answer is easy:
Conservatives are pure evil. But in the context of a federation, the
answer isn't that easy.

Most of the things social democrats/progressives believe in, social
safety net, universal healthcare, quality education, can be adressed
at the provincial and local level.

Granted, it is easier in provinces with independant income tax
systems, but even in places such as New Brunswick, the tax systems
allows provinces to restore fairness.

It might involve raising certain provincial taxes, but if the federal
conservatives keep federal taxes relatively low by cutting everythig
they can...

That is a big if, granted. Jails cost money. So does war. Or preparing
for war. Still, fundamentaly, the Conservatives are wired to cut
federal taxes. They may cut the CBC or Via rail to do so, but they
will spend less than the Liberals.

It is hard to imagine Ignatieff cuting national defence. There will
always be some "moral" war somewhere. There are opressed minorities à
la Kurds all over the world. And Sadam Hussein was not the last
dictator. And perhaps it is even harder to imagine the Liberals
cutting the CBC and Via Rail.

If the federal government increases federal spending, as the pro war
Ignatieff Liberals surely would, it is going to be that much harder to
increase provincial and even municipal spending.

I don't like the Harper's views on morality, next thing you know the
age of consent will be 35 and we will all have friends in jail. But he
is a fiscal concervative. He is not a fan of corporate wellfare. A
lean and, clearly, mean federal government will offer us social
democrats oppertunities at the provincial and municipal level.

We may have to watch more PBS and take inter-city bus, but purhaps
fighting homelessness will be more paletable to people who just got a
tax reduction. Upper middle class folks don't realise it is not the
poor that are sucking up government resourses, it is them!

Helping PS3 Users (and Google)

My previous post about watching podcasts using a PS3 was quite gratifying. 8 hours later, an my blog is one of the first results for "Watching podcasts on PS3"! Not bad for something posted in bed while using my iPhone.

2009-09-14

Watch a Podcast On a PS3

Problem: you want to watch podcasts on your PS3 as easely as you do
with your iPhone/iPod touch.
Solution: Google Reader or MyYahoo. Use a computer to set this up.
To use Yahoo, find the podcast subcription feed/RSS/XML on the web
site associated with your podcast. Or search for it using Yahoo: the
word podcast plus the name of your desired podcast usually does the
trick. Some pages have an "add to myYahoo" widget, others will make
you right click on the feed icon and select copy. Remember, you want
the podcast feed, not a text version/feed of the web site.

After clicking on "add content" at the top of your MyYahoo page, click
on "add rss feed", and paste the link you copied. Done.

The links to the
podcasts (aka videos) should now appear in your page. Often, the
videos will be in a .m4v format. That will often leave your computer,
and Windows Media, clueless. But your PS3 knows that .m4v it is just
an iTunes friendly extention for an .mpg file (also known as MP4).
Same idea with Google Reader. Login to Gmail, click on the reader
link. Paste the streams or put keywords so Google can help you locate
the right feed.
When you load your MyYahoo or Google Reader page on your PS3, you can
press the x button on the video link to watch it immediatly.
This might not work so well, in wich Case, press the square button,
select "file" and then "save target as". You can dowload the file in
the background of your PS3. Meaning you can surf, or do pretty much
anything elese with your PS3 while you dowload the file.
The file will be listed under the Network icon while it downloads.
When it is done, it will be listed under the videos icon.

Antidote for ZuneHD Envy

So what does the HD in ZuneHD stand for? Because without an adapter, it doesn't do High Definition. With an adapter you can TV-Out to a HDTV in glorious 720p. That isn't as good as your Blu-Ray player's 1080p, but it is the resolution of many HD TV stations (others are 1080i).

The 3.3 inch screen of the ZuneHD (iPod touch is 3.5 inch) can display in only 480 x 272 (the last number is the important one). That is about the same as an iPod touch (and iPhone) at 480 x 320.

The ZuneHD does have HD Radio capability. But that is HD as in Hybrid Digital. As in cramming as much content as possible into the radio frequency. If you are lucky, especially on the AM bandwidth, you will pick up higher quality radio feeds than analog.

If you don't want a smartphone that can stream Internet radio, and if you KNOW there is HD radio in your area with a station that you want to listen too (that is a lot of ifs), then the hybrid digital capability of the ZuneHD is a major plus.

The 720p to your TV is good if your XBOX, PS3 or computer is far from the right TV and you don't have a Blu-ray player with Internet capabilities. The required dock isn't pocket size, but should probably fit into a large purse.

OLED screens are awesome. The "O" is for organic. And like with food, organic is better... Oh, you want to know why? Um, ah, better contrast and uses less electricity. Better contrast is good. Extra battery life? Well, do people complain about the battery life of the iPod touch? No. People complain about the battery life of the iPhone. And the ZuneHD is not a phone.

Other details are scarce. The browser is apparently IE6 mobile. No flash player for you (not that there is one on the iPod touch).

The ZuneHD is available for under $300 dollars. But only in the USA because Microsoft doesn't like foreigners. Just to be clear: THE ZUNEHD WILL NOT BE SOLD OUTSIDE OF THE USA!

Hey Toronto, Christopher Hume Wants to give us your money

Medium income in 2005 for city of Moncton residents: $23,077

For Torontonians:
$28,675

Even if everybody paid the same income tax rate, that is a significant
difference. Per person, Torontonians pay way more in federal tax
dollars than Monctonians.

So I don't understand why Christopher Hume, and the Toronto Star in
general, are so adament that the federal government contribute more to
city services.

The only way Toronto residents would win under that scenario would be
if the federal government contributed to Toronto coffers above their
demographic weight.

What part of democracy doesn't The Star understand? By realocating
federal tax dollars to cities, based on demography or votes, Toronto
would lose and Moncton (and the majotity of other cities) would win!

From The New York Times:

Reading Underground

Even if they are wedged into a corner, pressed against strangers, New
York's subway riders still manage to read. And they read just about
everything.

William Davis is a Racist Fool

He is White so "he would stick out as a soar thumb" (Canadian Refugee Board member William Davis, justifying his one person decision to grant a South African refugee status.). Hello! There are 4 MILLION White South Africans. The other 91% of South Africans aren't exactly a homogenous group either.

South Africa is a huge country. It spans 3 oceans. There are over 12 million non-Blacks in South Africa.

Letting a South African live in Canada because he is White is racism of the worst kind. William Davis should be fired.
